Bunions Q & A

What is a bunion?

When the big toe deviates towards the centerline of the other toes, the metatarsal of the big toe will push outward. This misalignment of the toe acts to form a small, bony bump on the base of the toe known as a bunion. These bunions can cause a lot of pain as the weight of the body presses down each time a step is taken. They can also be aggravated by shoes that do not fit properly as the bunion rubs against the inside of the shoe. If the little toe and fifth metatarsal displays the bony protrusion it is referred to as a bunionette.

What causes a bunion?

Bunions can come from injury, birth defects, or an inherited foot type. Standing for extended periods of time, or wearing shoes that are not properly fitted, can also be the cause of a bunion. Certain types of arthritis may also be associated with the formation of bunions. The signs and symptoms of a bunion include:

  • Thickening of the skin at the base of the big toe
  • Restricted movement of the big toe
  • Persistent or intermittent pain in the toe
  • A bulging bump on the outside of the big toe
  • Corns or calluses where the first and second toes overlap
  • Swelling, redness, or soreness around the big toe joint

What treatments are available?

Treatment of bunions can start at home by wearing shoes that provide the wearer with proper arch support and enough room for the toes to fit comfortably. Other options for treatment can include shoe inserts, ice, and over-the-counter pain medications. These options focus on relieving the pain and pressure caused by the bunion. If symptoms don’t improve with modest treatments, or they get worse, surgery may be required to correct the problem. The surgical procedure is used to restore alignment to the big toe and allow it to return to its normal position.
